Automatic drip coffee: a practical brewing guide

The everyday workhorse can make a surprisingly thoughtful cup.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Automatic drip machines shower hot water over grounds in a filter. Begin with 30 g coffee and 500 g water, using a grind suited to your machine, then adjust strength to taste.

Starting recipe
30 g coffee / 500 g input water
Grind
Medium; follow basket guidance
Time
Machine-dependent; often 4–6 minutes
Temperature
Machine-controlled

What you’ll need

  • Clean drip machine and matching filter
  • Scale and grinder
  • Fresh drinking water

Make it, step by step

  1. Check the machine’s manual, clean the basket and carafe, and fit the correct filter.
  2. Add 500 g fresh water to the reservoir and 30 g medium-ground coffee to the basket.
  3. Level the bed, place the carafe correctly, and start the brew.
  4. Let the cycle finish before pouring for a more even strength throughout the batch.
  5. Stir or swirl the carafe gently. Serve promptly, or transfer to an insulated vessel rather than cooking it on a hot plate.
Make it yours

A machine “cup” may be smaller than your mug. Weighing the water avoids that breakfast-time surprise. A clean machine is part of the recipe.
