How should you store coffee beans?

Keep coffee away from air, heat, moisture and light. Build a practical storage routine that suits how quickly you use a bag.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Keep your everyday coffee tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat. Buy a quantity that fits your routine, close the bag after each use and avoid turning the storage shelf into a collection of half-open souvenirs.

Pick the practical location

The shelf beside the oven looks convenient until cooking turns it into the hottest corner of the kitchen. Choose a stable cupboard instead. If you use a canister, keep it clean and let it dry fully before refilling. An attractive clear jar is less useful if it stands in a sunny window.

Think in weeks of use

Calculate how much you actually brew. At 20 g each morning, a 340 g bag makes about 17 brews before grinder retention and occasional extra cups. That simple arithmetic is more useful than buying the largest bag because the price per gram looks inviting. Freshness is a shopping habit as well as a container choice.

Travel light

For a short trip, portion the amount you need into a suitable sealed container and keep it away from damp gear. Pre-ground coffee is convenient when you cannot carry a grinder; whole beans suit trips where you can grind at the destination. Keep a note of coffees you loved rather than keeping every open bag indefinitely.

Keep this in your notebook

Change one thing, taste, and keep a short note. A recipe becomes useful when you can repeat the cup you enjoy.
